چکیده
SYMX~mO-AVmNAL ~mVULLAaY ACTXVrrY during anaesthesia has been studied fluorometrically, measuring catechol amines in peripheral and adrenal vein blood. 1-u Results of these studies indicated that light anaesthesia did not produce any signi~cant rise in catechol amines, whereas deeper planes of anaesthesia employing ether, cydopropane, chloroform, and vinyl ether produced significant increases in blood levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline; halothane caused little or no change; thiopentone administration resulted in no change or a decrease in blood levels. One of the investigators e found decreased blood levels in deeper planes with cyclopropane and halothane. Periodic determination of blood levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline is a useful method for relating changes in depth of anaesthesia to the output of these hormones, and it also indicates total body output. The quantity of urinary output of adrenaline and noradrenaline seems to parallel the total body output. ~,e Therefore, determinations of urinary ou~ut should reflect the over-all changes in total body output during anaesthesia and surgery.

Plasma concentrations of catecholamines following adrenaline infiltration during gynaecological surgery.
High pressure liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection has been used to measure plasma catecholamine concentrations in six gynaecological patients undergoing halothane anaesthesia for cervical cone biopsy. Mean catecholamine concentrations before infiltration were 1.01 +/- 0.23 (SEM) nmol litre-1 (185 +/- 43 pg ml-1) for adrenaline, and 2.2 +/- 0.25 nmol litre-1 (364 +/- 41 (185 +/-...

Twenty patients undergoing major abdominal surgery were allocated randomly to receive either general anaesthesia with low-dose fentanyl plus intermittent systemic morphine for postoperative pain or the same general anaesthetic plus extradural analgesia during and following surgery (local anaesthetics from before skin incision until 24 h after skin incision plus extradural morphine 4 mg every 12...
متن کاملLaparoscopic cholecystectomy: haemodynamic and neuroendocrine responses after pneumoperitoneum and changes in position.
We have assessed the potential for myocardial ischaemia during laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 16 otherwise healthy patients. Continuous ambulatory ECG monitoring was commenced 12 h before operation and continued for 24 h after operation. The neuroendocrine stress response was assessed by measuring plasma concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline, human growth hormone, cortisol, renin and ...
متن کاملDetermination of Total Urinary Catecholamines
SYNOPSIS Two patients with phaeochromocytoma having atypical biochemical features are described. Total catecholamine excretion was normal in one and only slightly raised in the other; both had a diagnostic rise in output of metadrenaline and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxymandelic acid whilst 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylglycol excretion was increased in one of them. During hypertensive attacks adrenaline excr...
متن کاملSympathoadrenal response to gravitational stress.
Space flight imposes upon man many stresses; i.e., thermal, irradiation, sensory deprivation, acceleration (exit), deceleration (re-entry), and so forth. Some of these stresses, such as sensory deprivation, cannot be adequately studied within the earth's atmosphere whereas others, such as acceleration and deceleration, lend themselves more easily to experimentation. Although the sympathoadrenal...
